This was a grad school (Humanities) project which covers the earliest concepts of Purgatory from Sumerian & Babylonian tales, through the Old Testament, to Lough Derg (Ireland) to Notre Dame--when Pope Innocent III adopted it as an actual place and state for souls--to Dante's poetic elaboration. Prayers of the living for the souls of the dead. Advisors of Innocent III were Petrus Comester, Peter Lombard, and Peter the Chanter (Petrus Cantor). Also mentioned are Knight Owein, St. Patrick, Padre Pio, and Boethius.
