The conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza is a decades-long battle over sovereignty and land.
The conflict started in 2005 when Israel withdrew from Gaza. Hamas won the 2006 Palestinian legislative election. In 2007, a civil war between Hamas and Fatah resulted in Hamas gaining control of Gaza.
Israel imposed a naval blockade on the Gaza Strip in 2007. Israel also approved sanctions that included: Power cuts, restricted imports, Border closures.
Israel has repeatedly accused Hamas of denying fuel to the population and rerouting it toward its war efforts. Hamas has continued to attack Israel.
In October 2023, Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing more than 1,200 Israelis and taking an estimated 240 people hostage. Prime Minister Netanyahu said the fighting has entered its “second stage”, signaling the long-anticipated ground incursion is under way.
More than half a dozen countries, including South Africa, have withdrawn ambassadors or all their diplomats from Israel, in protest against its violence in the Gaza Strip.
What we can do at the policy level from the United States government it's what we continue to do to try to minimize civilian hot suffering to try to
help those civilians who are in Gaza
but at the same time we see every one of those deaths, and we mourn each one of them
