The busiest shipping lanes in the world have been challenging to navigate for the past year and are still so today. Early in December, Houthi rebels started assaulting ships that were entering the Red Sea via the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Ships diverting around southern Africa resulted in a 40% decrease in trade volumes passing via the Suez Canal. The second-busiest manmade shipping channel, the Panama Canal, has seen a 30% decrease in trade since November.
