Baltimore Bridge Collapses After Being Struck By Ship
NowThis World The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, collapsed early Tuesday morning after it was struck by a container ship.
The collapse sent several cars into the water and at the time of publishing, at least 7 people are missing following the incident. The collapse could have major implications for the supply chain since the once bustling Port of Baltimore has had to suspend vessel traffic as a result.
So far, it’s unclear what caused the cargo ship to collide with the bridge. Officials are calling the incident a ‘developing mass casualty event.’ At least 2 people have been rescued thus far but it’s unknown how many remain in the water.
The collapse happened 3 days after the 47th anniversary of the bridge opening.
Jayme Krause was working a night shift at an Amazon logistics facility when she and her coworkers felt a large rumble. Upon walking outside a short while later, they discovered the bridge had collapsed. Krause told Reuters she worries about the victims, but also about the logistics nightmare that will likely unfold as a result of the collapse.
‘The infrastructure here is already bad enough, and now we’re losing a very main port for our transportation, our distribution, all of it. I’m worried about how people are going to be getting food, water, because trucks for transport, cargo delivery trucks, they take the Key Bridge every day. There’s hundreds of them on the bridge every day,’ Krause said.
