Rock Star Baby. Sally meets an aspiring singer working in a diner, and they strike a deal when she discovers that the next silver spoon is on the trophy for the winner of a talent show. T-Bag and T-Shirt, naturally, have the same idea of taking home the award - by fair means or foul. This episode was originally broadcast on Tuesday, 7th February, 1989.
This one's a lot of fun, and after the opening brilliant angry exchanges between T-Bag and T-Shirt, we're treated to a plot that, while by no means identical, certainly shares a fair few traits with the famous Father Ted Eurosong episode. (Unless it's just me - anyone else see the similarities?) I'm not suggesting anything more than coincidence, but I will stress that this came first. That said, I wonder whether the ending owes anything to the famed Tom and Jerry short, Texas Tom...
As a music-themed episode, we get a short burst of pre-Strictly dancing from Kellie Bright, which is always a pleasure. The tune itself is unashamed full-on rock 'n' roll, with more than a nod to Eddie Cochran, I think. I'm not sure when it's set, but as long as it's pre-1962, I'll let them off with the cardinal sin of rhyming "baby" with "maybe". Nevertheless, the aggressive manufacturing of "Rip Shirt" rings true today possibly more than ever!
Ricky Romero is played by Michael Holoway in this - and thanks to those who pointed me in the direction of the *right* Michael Holoway. This one is famous for being the drummer in Flintlock, appearing in the likes of You Must Be Joking and Pauline's Quirkes, plus being Mike in the original run of The Tomorrow People. He plays the part well enough here, even if I can't quite place the accent, but his IMDB entry goes disappointingly quiet after this. Matt Zimmerman is the other guest star, and he needs no introduction round these parts, having completed the Pressman/Cathro 'big three' (T-Bag, Spatz, Mike and Angelo) and always providing excellent value. My favourite fact about Matt is that he was the voice of Alan Tracy in Thunderbirds.
Stay tuned for a little bit of Children's ITV continuity at the beginning and end featuring Mark Granger and Scally.
Many thanks to Grant for providing this recording.
