What a wonderful set of verses. Jesus uses a progression of key words beginning with "remain" (or remain in me) in verses 1-8, "love" and "remain" in verses 9-10 as progression verses to "love" in verses 11-17. It is very obvious and very hard to miss. Jesus uses the metaphor of the vine, which is always used for Israel in the Old Testament, though many times they are being chastised by God. He is the vine, and we are the branches. Isaiah 1 and Isaiah 5:1-7 are used as references. The desired fruitfulness of the branches is thoroughly discussed.
