Away from Rod and Emu, the Pink Windmill Kids look for ways to amuse themselves in their spare time. They soon find, however, that dabbling in things that shouldn't be dabbled in can lead to disappointment, frustration, inconvenience, and mass murder. The moral of the story? Never play the sort of games that Grotbags would play.
The production of the second series of Emu’s All Live Pink Windmill Show began with rehearsals as early as January 1985, and ran all the way through to completion of the final live show in July. Whilst filming, the team stayed at a hotel in Nottingham, near to Central's Lenton Lane Studios, kept busy during the day with run-throughs, going out on location, or working in the studio. But, the evenings... What can be done to fill the time of a group of bored but creative youngsters? Joe and Spencer hit upon a plan: make a movie. Much to the horror of the other guests, it was decided that the hotel was to be the set, and armed with Spencer’s video camera, the two 14-year-olds began filming.
Needless to say, the difficulties faced by every film-maker reared their ugly head, not least the 'artistic temperament' of actors of such renown and calibre. Nevertheless, after an epic struggle with a camera that couldn't handle low light, a microphone that would miss entire lines of dialogue while picking up an ant's footsteps, and Joe's JVC HR-2650 with its half-second delay and no edit controller, a private screening for select guests was held in their hotel room on the evening of Thursday, 4th July, 1985. The main cast including Rod Hull and Carol Lee Scott were there, as were the likes of director Colin Clews and choreographer Alan Harding.
The verdict? Well, obviously the world wasn't ready for such a powerful and moving piece of cinematographic genius back in 1985, so for the good of the Great British public, the difficult decision was made to seal away the only copy in Spencer's loft for the next 33 years. Now, though, for the first time ever, this paragon of storytelling, performance, continuity, keeping a straight face, overdubbing, and creative use of a hairdryer is available for everyone to see. It's a world premiere decades in the making, and you're all invited!
In all seriousness, now's a perfect time to thank both Spencer and Joe for everything they've done in relation to the ongoing Emu project. Honestly, there's a *lot* more to thank them for than you realise, so please don't forget to do so if and when the opportunity arises.
