The conflict in Ukraine has managed to reach a turning point that must not be ignored. The path that it takes from here could determine the future of the country and have an impact on the safety of Europe.
The Ukrainian Ground Forces have reported that their soldiers have recently retaken the Donetsk region town of Staromaiorske.
In two months, Ukrainian troops have advanced, at most, about 10 miles in two areas along the region's 100 mile front, according to independent analysis.
Since the beginning of Russia's invasion 18 months ago, Ukrainian forces have spent the majority of that time primarily on the defensive, trying to prevent Moscow's troops from capturing additional territory.
But this summer, Ukraine has launched an offensive, and with the assistance of billions of pounds worth of Western military equipment, it is attempting to dislodge the Russians from the territory that they had initially seized in the east and the southern part of the country.
Two months have passed since the beginning of the counter-offensive, but a glance at a large chart of eastern and southern Ukraine reveals that not much has changed in that region.
A push by the Ukrainians through the expanse of Russian-held territory all the way to the Azov Sea would interrupt Russia's supply lines and cut off their troops in Russian-annexed Crimea and farther west.
