There is no PGA Tour-LIV Golf merger The truth is much worse
The world of golf, including many PGA Tour professionals, were shocked with the massive merger announcement between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. The ongoing rivalry highlighted two North American golfing leagues as they clashed against each other, but now this announcement showcases the likely ending to such a drawn out rivalry. But is this merger really what it seems, or could the truth beneath the headlines actually be much worse? We’re here to dig a little deeper and get you the information that you’re looking for.
It was reported that LIV and the PGA Tour will merge into a single entity that will include the European Tour. A public statement was made public immediately following the original announcement and it became apparent that several PGA Tour professionals were completely unaware that the announcement was going to take place. The apparent merger sent shockwaves through the entire sports world, but the apparent result was two rival golfing leagues suddenly working together in the world of men’s professional golf. But what secrets lay beneath the agreement? Could the announcement of a merger be a cover-up for something else going on behind the scenes?
While the public statement makes it sound like there’s a merger taking place, this is what you might get if you read between the lines of the announcement. The PGA Tour and LIV Golf have agreed to a deal that would allow the funders of LIV, which is the Saudi Arabian public investment fund, to dive into men’s professional golf by forming a new enterprise that branches off of the PGA Tour and the European Tour. That means that all three golfing tours would be operated through one main entity, which would be something that is completely new for everyone involved.
Saudi Arabia’s private investment fund will suddenly have a ton of control and influence on men’s professional golf in North America, mainly because they will have a seat on the board of directors with Yasir al-Rumayyan, who controls the PIF for Saudi Arabia. The sports washing campaign that has been going on indirectly through LIV has now resulted in exactly what Saudi Arabia wanted in the first place. Does that mean LIV goes away forever, or will it continue to operate as it has for its first two seasons?
