The Philippines and the United States began their largest joint military drill with 18,000 marine troops on July 11, 2023, as the allies seek to counter growing Chinese assertiveness in the region. The drill came a day after China concluded its three-day military exercise near Taiwan, in response to President Tsai Ing-wen’s April meeting with US House speaker Kevin McCarthy.
