Perhaps hoping to capitalize on the frozen ground conditions, Russian forces have increased their offensive efforts at the front during the last two weeks.

Russian soldiers make progress at Battleground Avdiivka, but both sides hope for larger-scale attacks.

Instead of trying to outflank the city with fast-moving, armored tank strikes, the Kremlin changed its approach to penetrate it with infantry. At one point, they used a sewer tunnel.

Even though the Kremlin may decide to change the attack's strategy and direction, recent official and independent news reports predict that there will be intense pressure on the salient that Kyiv controls for weeks or months. Russian forces have advanced further against Ukrainian defenses defending the battleground city of Avdiivka, although these advances are probably limited.

Since Russia's initial invasion of Ukraine in 2014, front-line Ukrainian defenses have been located in Avdiivka, an industrial town near Donetsk in the Donbas. In late 2023 and early 2024, Avdiivka experienced significant Russian offensives supported by armor, a large amount of artillery, and even airstrikes.

According to accounts from Russian military bloggers, Russian foot soldiers were continuing to advance in squads and had reached the southern suburbs of Avdiivka on Thursday along Sobornaya, Sportivnaya, and Chernyshevskij streets. According to these reports, Kremlin infantrymen were expanding their reach in Tsarska Okhota, a park with forests southwest of the capital.
Moscow initiated an expensive, futile assault to seize control of the town early in the morning. Since 2014, Russian-backed soldiers have been fighting for control of the town in Ukraine.

With 32,000 residents prior to the war, Kyiv believes its armed troops are impeding Russian attempts to encircle the town.

Russian spying and espionage teams were driven out of the southern Avdiivka sector after making an unsuccessful attempt to enter.

The southern residential area of the town was full of modest private residences, which gave the Moscow military an edge.
However, the Russians also lost a great deal of ground. But in response to recent Russian advances, violence was erupting in the streets of Avdiivka, according to the "Thirteenth Telegram channel."

The channel says Moscow's military used "the tactics of undermining" to support their movement, which means tunneling under enemy bunkers, stuffing them with explosives, and detonating them.

In an attempt to win tactical ground with heavy armament, Russian forces during the Battle of Bakhmut sought to mimic attritional light infantry frontal assaults when they broke through Bakhmut's city boundaries. and in Avdiivka, they are acting in the same manner.

Russian soldiers are continuously trying to encircle Avdiivka, but Ukrainian defenders are stopping them from doing so, according to a report released by the Ukrainian General Staff on Thursday morning.

How much of Avdiivka the Russians have taken over is unknown. Fighting has largely taken place in Avdiivka since Moscow's forces first entered Ukrainian territory in the Donbas and Crimea in 2014, both during and after the full-scale invasion.

It is geographically and logistically close to Donetsk, a key city for both Russia and the separatists.

If Russia were to conquer Avdiivka, a sizable bulge in the Ukrainian front line would be eliminated, and maybe a route to Kramatorsk—located 43 miles north of the Ukrainian-controlled Donetsk region—would be built. Kramatorsk serves as the administrative capital of the area at the moment.

The Russian army has been attempting to take Avdiivka, a city in eastern Ukraine, for the last two months. It started with a full-scale frontal assault.

Numerous equipment items sustained damage. After that, it fired armored columns in various directions.

To breach Ukrainian lines, a third wave of small infantry formations is presently being brought in. For nearly ten years, Avdiivka has been on the front lines.

The provincial capital, Donetsk, is three miles to the southwest and twenty minutes' drive away. In the spring of 2014, Russia staged an invasion.

Then there was fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces in a business district that overlooked a tree- and yellow-feather-grass wasteland.

Sources from the ISW and Ukrainian news organizations claimed that Kremlin planners continued to view Avdiivka as a top sector goal for 2024. As per the report by the Svoi Novyni information portal, an expert from the Interior Ministry named Maksym Morozov stated that Moscow intends to concentrate up to 40,000 soldiers of lower grade from Storm Z and Storm V to launch strikes with the aim of completely cutting off the city.

The Ukrainians defending Avdiivka currently have enough to fend off an assault. However, the Ukrainians will require a lot more ammo if the Russians continue to advance in that manner.
