Most atheists these days distance themselves from the horrendous barbarities perpetrated by atheistic regimes in the recent past. They further distance themselves by saying those in power were not really atheists, when in fact, they were. Their policies, doctrines, and rulings clearly referenced atheistic ideology.
Of course, it is a little different when atheists are not ruling the world. In our contemporary times, atheists champion human rights and all kinds of values and virtues that were stolen from the Christian worldview. After all, humanism is essentially an outgrowth of
Christianity's influence upon western culture.
But history has shown us that when atheistic rulers are given absolute power, things are not so pretty.
