This ancient Anglo-Scottish surname has at least four origins. First, when found in southern Scotland, it often derives from a Yorkshire family called Ros, Ross, and Rosse, who purchased large tracts of land in Ayrshire in the 12th century. This family was Norman French and came to England in 1066 with William, Duke of Normandy, known as William the Conqueror. They originated in the village of Lotz near Caen in Normandy; the second is an English name but of Welsh (Old English) origin, such as Herefordshire, Northumberland, the Ross region in northern Scotland, Louth in the East Riding of Yorkshire, and Lancashire, It derives from the names of various places called Ross. All are derived from the archaic word "rhos" meaning cape. Third, of pre-7th century Anglo-Saxon origin, it may be a derivation of the personal name "Rozzo," meaning fame. Finally, of Old High German origin, it may be an occupational name for a horse breeder. It derives from "hros" meaning horse. Early examples of this surname recorded include Serlo de Ros in Domesday Book, England in 1086, Bernard de Ross in Yorkshire in 1177, Robert Rosce in Pipe Roll, Kent in 1199, Irvine, Scotland in 1205 Sir Godfrey de Rose, and Donaldus de Ross of Perth, Scotland in 1413.
