Pablo Escobar - the infamous drug lord who ran the Medellín Cartel and at one point controlled over 80% of the global cocaine market. In this video, we explore the riveting history behind the rise and fall of the world's most notorious narco-terrorist.
Born in 1949 in Colombia, Pablo Escobar came from humble beginnings but entered the drug trade in the 1970s by smuggling cocaine into the U.S. He cultivated coca, processed cocaine and established the first smuggling routes before creating the Medellín Cartel. At its peak, his cartel was shipping over 80 tons of cocaine to the U.S. per month and bringing in $420 million dollars in monthly revenue.
Known for violence, Escobar pioneered new ways to smuggle like hiding cocaine in plane tires. As his wealth grew, he bought mansions, exotic animals and owned luxury automobiles while generously donating to charitable causes to build his Robin Hood image.
To avoid extradition, he waged war against the Colombian government by bombing, killing politicians, judges and presidential candidates. His reign of terror led to it being known as the worst years of violence in Colombia.
In the late 1980s, Escobar surrendered and constructed his own luxurious private prison called La Catedral. But he continued criminal activities forcing officials to try moving him to a real prison. Escobar escaped and went into hiding.
The manhunt that followed would lead to the killing of Escobar in 1993. He was shot by Colombian security forces after his location was traced. At 44, his larger-than-life story ended violently amid the violence he created.
Escobar's legacy remains one of death, terror and pain. But it's also a story of how far one man will go to satisfy greed for money and power. This video dives into the life of the criminal mastermind who became a legend.
