For what it lacks in ferocity it makes up for in cuteness.
While it isn't the pop culture archetypal shark with open jaw and razor sharp teeth, marine biologist Dr Jodie Rummer describes the epaulette shark as the "toughest" on the Great Barrier Reef.
"It doesn't look really tough in terms of a shark face and it's not really bitey but it's really tough in terms of what it can tolerate," Dr Rummer said.
This year, researchers at James Cook University had their most successful year in their breeding program, with around 30 shark juveniles hatched from eggs in tanks in a lab.
