Lost in Space. The next silver spoon is one of the exhibits aboard a spaceship, and the captain and her oh-so-futuristic robot stand between Sally and success. But what should she do when she's beamed down to the deserted planet below? Meanwhile, T-Shirt experiments with a different beverage. This episode was originally broadcast on Tuesday, 17th January, 1989.
By all accounts, the writers weren't too keen on this one, not least because of interference from on high. (Sally referring to T-Bag as a "witch" at 18:45 being a massive red flag - that was never the intention. One joke was that she's a "sauceress", though I'm not sure that's ever said out loud throughout the series as it only really works when written down.) But while the episode hasn't aged as well as others visually due to its Blake's 7-ness, I think it's fair to say that it at least has its moments - although my favourite seems to be an unintended one. Kellie Bright puts on her very best well-spoken Queen's English throughout, but if you listen very carefully at 15:35, she slips into full-on EastEnder for just one sentence. Made me giggle, anyway. Other good gags include a reference to the famous Pepsi ad, the metal detector scene, plus the callback to the previous week's ending.
Andrie Reid is the guest star of this one, and she's actually inextricably linked with the birth of T-Bag more than you'd imagine. You see, she was one of the cast of Words, Words, Words, Thames Television's semi-educational programme which led to Lee Pressman and Grant Cathro meeting properly for the first time and ultimately deciding to collaborate - from tiny acorns and all that. Otherwise, Andrie is probably most recognisable as being one of Cleo Rocos's mates on Kenny Everett in the early 80s, though sadly her IMDB entry is rather sparse. That said, while I don't want to lay it on too thick or anything, how many other black female spaceship captains can you name in the history of television? How many are from the 80s or earlier? Just a thought. Mr McCannickle, meanwhile, is played by Bill Monks - he was a regular in Brass and Mr Pye back in the 80s, plus he boasts credits in The Bill, One Foot in the Grave, Bread, and Mr Don and Mr George (remember that?).
Stay tuned for the Children's ITV continuity at the beginning and end featuring Mark Granger and none other than Scally - I reckon this may be the latter's second day on the job. Although everyone of a certain age remembers Scally well, here's something you may have forgotten: when he first appeared, he was mute, and the fact that he could talk was a gradual reveal. I'm pretty sure the viewers found out before Mark did, but my memory may be playing tricks on me there. Here, you'll notice, he doesn't utter a word.
On this subject, actually, I should give a big shout out to Richard Coombs, who created and operated Scally. He boasts a very impressive CV, including Spitting Image, Sooty, Grotbags, Round the Bend, Gilbert the Alien from Get Fresh, and a Vogon in Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, amongst others:

I wonder how the European Figure Skating Championships went, and whether it was worth cancelling Count Duckula for them.
Many thanks to Grant for providing this recording.
