On September 13th, 1985, the F-15 Eagle made history when it became the Celestial Eagle! By rapidly placing satellites into orbit in the late 1970s, the Soviet Union was able to maintain constant surveillance of US carrier battle groups. America made the decision to equip the F-15 with the anti-satellite missile ASM-135 in order to fight this threat and show off its capabilities. The target satellite was the Solwind P78-1, a spectrometer that had been sent into polar orbit in February 1979 but had lost all usefulness by 1985. That day at noon, the California Edwards Air Force Base saw the F-15 Eagle launch into the sky. Because Solwind was orbiting Earth at a speed of 17,000 miles per hour, the pilot had to make incredibly accurate calculations prior to launching the missile. You'll undoubtedly miss it if you move X number of feet to the left or right. Then, from 35,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean, he launched the ASM-135. A tiny IR-guided homing mechanism directed the missile toward the satellite's heat source, and it successfully hit the Solwind.
