Abraham is often referred to as the father of the faith because he is a model of how everyone (Jew and Gentile) are justified by faith apart from works! The reason this is difficult for “Church of Christ” is because they believe that obedience to God’s commands are not “works”. They see works as “man made traditions” and not the Greek usage from ‘ergon’ as defined: that which displays itself in activity of any kind, deed, and action. Abraham was justified by faith apart from his works of obedience like: leaving the land of Ur, circumcision, offering up his son Issac…and we today are justified by faith apart from works of baptism, going to church, reading the Bible, acts of love, forgiving others, etc! Once we are justified by faith we then display our good works before the watching world all to the glory of God. These good works are sanctifying works of obedience that Christians are called too!
