BibleProject Ancient Hebrew writers used the word “shamayim” to refer to the space between the earth and the sky and the space above the sky. Shamayim means "sky of the skies," and it was so high and inaccessible to the Hebrew imagination that it was thought to be the place where God's throne room existed.
