Mike Johnson's roots trace back to Louisiana, where he was born and raised, and represented the state's 4th District in Congress. He is an alumnus of Louisiana State University, where he earned both a bachelor's degree and a law degree and was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity.
Before starting his political journey, Johnson worked as a constitutional lawyer, advocating for right-wing evangelical policies across various sectors of society. He also collaborated with organizations like the Alliance Defending Freedom, leading a counterprotest against a nationwide campaign to combat anti-LGBTQIA+ bias in schools.
In 2015, Johnson transitioned to politics, earning a seat in the Louisiana State Legislature. During his early days in office, he proposed an anti-LGBTQIA+ bill so extreme that a fellow Republican from Louisiana reportedly labeled him a 'despicable bigot of the highest order.'
Since his election to Congress in 2016, Johnson has been a proponent of school choice, an opponent of LGBTQIA+ rights, a climate change denier with connections to the fossil fuel industry, and a supporter of decertifying President Joe Biden's 2020 election victory. His most notable views, however, revolve around abortion.
Now, as Speaker of the House, Johnson embarks on a new chapter in his political career. Whether he will be a transformative leader or contribute to the ongoing turmoil remains to be seen.
