This interesting name is of Anglo-Saxon origin and is an example of a large group of early European family names that gradually emerged from the habitual use of nicknames. The nicknames were first given in reference to a variety of characteristics, including physical features or idiosyncrasies, mental or moral traits, supposed resemblance to the appearance or nature of an animal or bird, customs, dress, or occupation. In this instance, it is a nickname given to a tall person, derived from the pre-7th century Old English "lang, long", long, tall, from Latin "longus"; name developments since 972 (see below) include the following: Berard Long (1121 - 1148, Suffolk), Godfrey Lunge (1179, Gloucester), and Adam ye Langge (1279, Yorkshire). Contemporary surnames are found as Long, Lang(e), Lung, and Laing. One John Long was an early immigrant to Barbados in April 1635. The first recorded spelling of the family name is Aetheric des Langa, dated 972 (Old English Bynames, Northamptonshire, reign of King Edgar, 959-975). Surnames became necessary when the government introduced personal taxation. In England, this was known as the poll tax. Over the centuries, surnames in all countries continued to "evolve," often creating surprising variants from the original spellings.
