When a Saudi F-15 Eagle Pilot Defected To Sudan In 1990 #shorts

On November 11th, 1990, a Saudi Air Force pilot took a state-of-the-art F-15 fighter jet to Sudan, for the purpose of seeking political asylum. Following Israel and Japan, Saudi Arabia was the third nation to purchase the F-15 Eagle, but a pilot from that nation, who was reported to have sympathies for a fellow Arab nation, is believed to have defected after becoming disenchanted with his government and its growing relations with the Western Bloc. The event took place as the first Western military forces started to establish long-term bases in Saudi Arabia. Immediately after this, the US claimed that the pilot had not defected but had simply "slipped beyond radar coverage." At the time, an F-15's cost was less than $30 million. However, Sudan reportedly returned the fighter to Saudi Arabia for $50 million, rejecting efforts to bring back the pilot, who was later granted political refuge in the East African nation. The Soviets could have utilized all of their resources to get the US Air Superiority fighter aircraft directly. We are not worried about any issues with morale within the Saudi armed forces or air corps, an official from the US later stated.
