This summer our Rain-shine team have been trying out some traditional children's games. The kids were rather skeptical about learning many of the rhymes and activities, many of which were unfamiliar to our young team. In a world full of TV and computerised toys, the simplicity of more traditional forms of entertainment made the children hesitant. When they got started and really started to participate they were all surprised by how much fun these 'old-fashioned' games could be.
Clapping games are a great way to get children playing together without the need for competition. They help with both communication and coordination. Getting the moves right is actually quite challenging and requires good teamwork to get to the end of the rhyme.
The girls really didn't want to make this video. That is, until they had a rather amusing adult demonstration and a few minutes to practice. In the end, clapping was loads of fun and they were soon challenging each other to sing the rhyme in different ways. The wobbly bridge was the girls idea and certainly added a new dimension to their game.
Learning something new can be daunting and it's easy to reject an idea as 'boring' rather than give it a go. Our girls had a great sense of achievement when they mastered their clapping rhyme. Maybe it's time to challenge your kids to try something new? What clapping rhymes do you know? Why not make up some new moves too?
