The real danger of Angels Landing in Zion National Park isn't the thousand foot drops, but rather the decisions made on the trails. For a hike that is almost always called one of the deadliest or most dangerous hikes in the world. Angels Landing is not all that dangerous when hikers are attentive, and considerate.
But when people get hyper-focused on bucket list check marks and fail to respect the trail and those sharing it, things can get very dangerous as I found out.
I'm an extremely experienced hiker, and I'm a responsible hiker. But that almost wasn't enough one day atop Angels Landing. One of my fellow hikers brought a completely inappropriate, selfish and surprisingly dangerous toy and nearly cause me to fall close to 1,500 ft from the summit to the canyon floor.
The experience has fueled my passion for safe, and responsible recreation and made me grateful for the many days I've had since. Angels Landing ins't a hike to undertake lightly. But it's also a hike the inattentive, reckless, and foolhardy should avoid at all costs. Leave the toys at home. Zion National Park does not benefit from them, and they could get someone killed.
