Sky News Australia Queensland Premier Steven Miles is under fire for rejecting a key recommendation from the 2032 Olympic Games infrastructure review.
Instead of knocking down and rebuilding the Gabba at a cost of $2.7 billion, the Queensland Premier says they will invest $1 billion into upgrades at the Gabba and Suncorp stadium, where the opening and closing ceremonies will be held.
The state government will also invest $1.6 billion into upgrades at Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre despite a review which he commissioned finding it would be a waste of money and have no significant legacy benefits.
The review was led by former Brisbane lord mayor Graham Quirk and recommended that a new stadium be built at Victoria Park, which would house 55,000 seats at a cost of $3.4 billion.
The Premier, however, has said building the new stadium is way too expensive and doubled down on his plan to invest in existing stadiums in the state’s parliament on Tuesday.
