The Washington Navy Yard officially became the United States Naval Gun Factory in Dec. 1945. It was re-designated Washington Navy Yard in July 1964. By 1942 the NGF apprentice program had expanded to an all time high of 3116 apprentices. My father was one of those apprentices, and completed the Precision Lens, Prism, and Test Plate Maker apprenticeship on Nov. 15, 1942. At about 10:09 in the film, optics production is covered. The bulk of the optical glass supplied to the NGF was provided by the National Bureau of Standards. Between the wars NBS was the only research facility engaged in research and production of optical glass. Funds were provided by the Naval Bureau of Ordnance. Before 1940 the entire production was going to the Naval Gun Factory. Production went from 15,000 pounds in 1940 to 240,000 pounds in 1942-43. To keep up supply, 1/2 being supplied by NBS, Bausch & Lomb, Haywood Optical, and Libbey-Owens Ford provided the rest. This glass was used to produce lenses, prisms, windows for use in all kinds of fire control devices. A large range-finder could contain as many as 160 optical elements. At the end of the film are shown my father's apprentice certificate, scenes at the NBS glass works in the District, and the NGF Optical Shop reunion in 1961.
