The Empire star stated on Monday's broadcast of The Breakfast Club that she had split up with the former NFL player. In September, 37-year-old Hayden was absent from Henson's 50th birthday celebration in Mexico, sparking social media speculation about their breakup. After two years of engagement, Henson said the couple broke up because they couldn't agree on what they wanted from the relationship.
"I recently turned 50 and I hadn't spoken anything yet, but it didn't work out. My best. I said, "Therapy." Therapy, please. Henson said, "But if you're both not on the same page with that then you feel like, you're taking it on yourself, and that's not a fair position for anybody to play in a relationship."
Henson, a mental health advocate, said that while in therapy and working through her own trauma, she realized that she and Hayden needed to "make ourselves happy to make each other happy" because they had been unfulfilled in the relationship because they relied too much on each other.
"My happiness is not his responsibility, and his is not mine," she stated. It's impossible for one person to carry the relationship. You have to come up and be understanding, but you can't lose yourself in that."
Two years after their engagement, the award-winning actor and Hayden were slated to marry in June. In March, Henson revealed that the couple had postponed their wedding to prevent the spread of coronavirus, as both she and Hayden had elderly relatives at risk of COVID-19 infection.
In 2018, Henson posted an Instagram snapshot of her brilliant diamond engagement ring to announce Hayden's proposal.
