Going Abroad: Vienna - Flying. The gang are talking about aeroplanes, and Geoffrey explains their function and what sort of things to expect when going on holiday. Rod, Jane and Roger provide the musical interlude, while Niall Padden reads us a story. This episode was originally broadcast on Monday, 22nd January, 1979, though evidently this recording is of a later repeat. [EDIT: I previously had this one labelled as S10E59 - "Trip 4: By Plane" - broadcast on Wednesday, 3rd June, 1981, but that was definitely wrong. I think we have to chalk this one down as more educational than story-driven, but there's still more than enough to keep us entertained. Bungle's silliness is nicely undercut by Zippy's telling him so, and George's shy question about whether planes have lavatories is a good reminder of the sort of thing that can really trouble a child's mind. I really liked that Cosgrove Hall animation in there, too - they had a great house style. And if ever anyone wanted to know how different airport security is nowadays compared to then, just have a look at all those passengers happily boarding the plane from the runway area!
There's something odd going on with the story that's read to us, in that the name is given by Geoffrey as A Trip by Air, yet the end credits list it as the much more clever The Plane in Spain. Meanwhile, in not entirely unrelated news, T-Bag fans may be interested to note the names of Messrs Pressman, Warren and Thau all in the end credits - in an episode which was made in the 1970s.
