Working Things Out. George, Zippy and Bungle have been to a party and come back asking plenty of questions. Meanwhile, there's also lots of talk about air and wind and blowing, making this a slightly confused-feeling episode and a pretty tricky one for me to work out exactly what the theme was (which I suppose is quite meta, when you think about it). Turns out the original broadcast date was Friday, 25th July, 1986.
The Rod, Jane and Freddy song is called Why Do You Cry?, which is accidentally poignant given that this is my first Rainbow upload since the sad news that poor old Freddy is no longer with us. He was a singer, an actor, and a writer, and he always seemed so friendly and cheerful and perfectly suited to his role. I'm not qualified to offer anything too profound, but he spent the best part of a decade as a regular on children's television, so I know that a specific generation holds an awful lot of love for him, myself included. Sincere condolences to all concerned - not least Jane, his wife.
Other interesting points of note are that the episode was written by Bungle himself, a.k.a. Stanley Bates. I've mentioned it before, but his personal magnum opus was the Christmas special later this year which was, frankly, utterly bananas. His episodes were often on the surreal side, and while that doesn't apply to this one, he still made sure to give his own character the best bit as he sinks George's boat. The story, meanwhile, is a fun pirate one called All Aboard the Rhubarb, while we get a very brief snatch of CITV continuity right at the end presented by Basil Brush with guests Andy Smart and Angelo Abela from Get Fresh. The "Mike and Angelo" joke gave me a giggle, three years before the fact. That's 100% a coincidence, in case you were wondering.
