On January 20, 1991, three B-52 bombers were in the air during a daylight strike on a weapons storage facility southwest of Basra. Since they were operating in the same region as the B-52 mission, their planning team negotiated a support package with the US Navy. The Navy pilot's reply when asked about the B-52 package by E-3 Sentry AWACS was, "I'm not functioning with them." They heard the following alert from a US Navy F/A-18 Hornet around 15 minutes into the bomb run, "Aircraft at a particular position, reveal yourself!" The airborne early warning and control aircraft informed the Hornet pilot that they were "friendly guys, so leave them alone." This back-and-forth exchange lasted for almost four minutes. The Hornet pilot was confused, so he "locked on" and requested authorization to fire his missiles. Finally, he was informed that we were B-52s flying at a particular altitude and speed. This seemed to settle down our Naval friend a little, but not much. Later, we discovered that the AWACS located him after listening to the tapes again and obtaining his call sign. We hoped he had a good meeting with his superior officer!
