Douglas DC-3 - A new life after WWII for the legendary airliner and former raisin bomber

The "Douglas DC-3" is one of the most famous aircraft types in aviation history: not only because of its use as a "raisin bomber" during the Berlin Blockade in 1948/49, but worldwide. The DC-3, built between the years 1935 to 1946, is considered a classic!

The low-wing aircraft is powered by two Pratt & Whitney R1830-90 twin star engines with 14 cylinders each. Each engine produces 1,200 hp which gives the DC-3 a top speed of 346 km/h and a cruise performance of 300 km/h. Fully loaded, the maximum range is 800 km. Military versions were designated C-47 "Skytrain", C-53 "Skytrooper" and R-4 D (troop transporter for the USA Navy). For the Royal Air Force, the aircraft was produced under British licence under the designation C-47 "Dakota".
Even today, some of these aircrafts are still in regular service in Colombia. For pilot Joaquin Sanclemente, the DC-3 is the safest and best machine ever built.
