Matthew 19:16-30 - Not good enough
The problem with the word good is that it is a comparative adjective. Something can only be good when it is compared to something else. We might say that broccoli is good compared to dirt, but if we compared broccoli to ice cream, suddenly the broccoli does not seem as good. The definition of good changes depending on what we compare it to!
If we were to ask the average person if they think they are good, almost everyone one of them would say they are. The reason is because they are comparing themselves to other people. They are not as bad as the person in prison, they might be better than their neighbor, but that is their definition of good. The question that we need to answer is are we good enough to get to heaven?
