Prime Minister wants bipartisan support on religious freedom

· 19.03.2024 · 03:35:48 ··· ··· Tuesday ·· 2 (2) Sky News Australia
The government is considering two pieces of draft legislation relating to religious discrimination, but the Prime Minister said they will not be proceeding unless there is bipartisan support, according to a caucus spokesperson.

The Prime Minister told the caucus that he had reached out to Opposition leader Peter Dutton on the issue and is waiting to hear back.

One of the bills relates to protecting the rights of schools to hire on the basis of faith while also protecting students’ rights.

“They wanted until the Dunkley by-election before coming forward with these two contentious proposals – aged care reform … and changes to religious discrimination laws,” Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell said.

“They promised reform in both areas but now they appear to be saying the government that if they don’t get bipartisan support, nothing will be happening in these difficult policy areas.”
