The fact that Tesla is currently at the forefront and the industry's leader is acknowledged by the country's big automakers except Toyota. And so, Elon Musk just made an insane offer to Toyota. Ford and General Motors, the two major companies that made up Detroit's Big Three, believed they could continue to be leaders in spite of Tesla's great market value, which amply demonstrated a shift in the power structure. However, 20 years after the producer of electric vehicles was founded, the two renowned automakers have finally acknowledged that the disruptor is now the industry standard.
Two first-ever agreements served as manifestations of this acknowledgement. Customers of the two well-known automakers will be able to use the Tesla supercharger network, the largest network of charging stations in the nation, to replenish the batteries of their electric cars beginning in 2024. This network has about 17,000 stations spread across the United States. Only 12,000 superchargers will be available to GM and Ford customers, though.
Supercharger and EV Connectors
Since charging above 80% is rarely necessary, trips are usually brief and convenient, according to Tesla, which claims that superchargers can add up to 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes.
Ford and GM have decided to use Tesla's charging connector, which links the electric vehicle to the charging station, in light of this. The only item that owners of the two Michigan giants will need to buy is an adaptor, which will run them about $100.
This is a significant victory for Tesla and Musk since not only are they creating a new source of income, but their EV charging outlet is also expected to become the industry standard. There are now two charging standards in North America. There is Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) and the Combined Charging System (CCS). All other automakers use the latter, which use a slow-charging connector.
The public charging network, which according to the Energy Department presently includes 54,000 locations, connects to the CCS as well. The issue with the public charging network is that there aren't many fast chargers available, which makes it difficult to swiftly recharge your battery. There are 7,400 superchargers at public stations that use CCS in total.
No other automaker but Ford and GM has joined Musk and Tesla. However, the business mogul just took the initiative and urged Toyota to join the new alliance formed by Tesla. The offer was posted on Twitter in response to a user mentioning a news piece demonstrating how difficult it was to charge the batteries for a trip in Toyota's new all-electric SUV.
According to Sawyer Merritt, a self-described Tesla investor and fan, "Business Insider drove the new Toyota bZ4X EV from New York to Washington DC, and back," he posted on Twitter on June 14. Even at 37%, the bZ4X refused to pull more than 35 kW charging speed during the nine-hour voyage, which required three hours of charging.
