I hear this all the time, parents of autistic kids who say something like “hey I was getting my child diagnosed autistic and the doctor started asking me stuff and it turns out i am also autistic”
This is so common, and it should be! As autism has no direct cause as yet that science can point to, however it is know to be part of our DNA and genetics.
I had a conversation with my recent updated diagnosis doctor about how autism occurs in the genes, where does it lay, and he said that the mother and father will carry some of the make up of it, and are probably autistic to.
This means that autism really doesn't skip a generation if it is in the genetics it just displays heavier in some people.
I would also say that when the parents of an autistic kid also get diagnosed it is almost like a light bulb moment and everything switches on for them.
And as it is a late autism diagnosis the autism diagnosis can be uplifting for some parents as they look at the autism diagnosis criteria.
