The city of Xi'an, the starting point of the historical Silk Road in China, is home to the Great Mosque, one of the oldest mosques established outside the Arabian Peninsula in Islamic history.
Built in the 8th century, a century after the birth of Islam, the mosque is considered one of the rarest monuments in the world with its architecture that combines traditional Chinese style with Islamic motifs and worship functions.
The historic Silk Road, which was not only a route of trade between East and West, but also a route of interaction of ideas and beliefs, was instrumental in the recognition and spread of Islam in China. The Great Mosque of Shian continues to exist as a living example of this heritage.
