💰💰 I wasn't buying whisky casks 20 years ago, so I can't comment on the sales process, but my presumption had been that it was a way for distilleries to source money and was sold to enthusiast who wished to be part of the journey and to own a piece of a distillery. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
Today you see casks being SPECIFICALLY sold as investments and a way to make money. It's probably why I get asked by friends who know nothing about whisky, about how they can invest in a whisky cask because they've seen ads telling them how much money they can make.
@sebwoolf made a good point, that the difference is maybe that back then the consumer was the enthusiasts who weren't specifically involved to make lots of money. Whereas today a large number of buyers aren't interested in the distillery, but purely how much money they can make.
⌚️ A similar scenario is in the watch market. People starting their watch purchasing journey by asking 'which watch will make me the most money' vs 'which watch do I like'.
I can't help but think that if a new distillery is selling their casks to the consumer as investments and highlighting potential returns, rather than the chance to own a small part of a new distillery's journey, that this is further fueling the fire.
