Gabe is an autistic and nonspeaking teen. He has suffered from debilitating anxiety when faced with traveling by plane. We have been taking lots of road trips for the last five years due to Gabe's fear of flying. I got my car only four years ago and have put 102,000 miles on it! We don't want to deny Gabe of living and having important experiences so we have been taking a lot of steps to help him overcome his fear of flying aka aerophobia!
We began by working with DCA airport and United Airlines. Together they allowed Gabe to "practice" walking through the airport, going through TSA, sitting at the gate, and even entering a plane!
The first time Gabe was allowed to enter a plane during one of our practice runs he was very scared. He did not want to stay on it or sit down.
We attempted a second time and Gabe had more success, but was not over his fear. We had a trip planned to fly to Colorado in the weeks ahead. We didn't know how it would happen. Luckily, Gabe did get on the plane to Colorado but during our flight he became very scared and we had a hard time getting him to sit down. The flight back home was easier, but we knew we needed to keep practicing. We took him to the Air and Space Museum where he was allowed to enter the planes in the museum and check out the cockpit. He was doing so much better!
I was online and saw a video of Dream Aero! Real flight simulation of the famous Boeing 737 NG Airliner for everyone! I knew that was going to be the key to getting Gabe over his fear. It is located in Bethesda, MD at the Westfield Montgomery Mall which is local to us!
We met our flight instructor Mark and instantly felt comfortable! Gabe ran up the stairs into the simulator so fast! He was excited! He put on the Pilot's hat and jacket and we were ready for take-off! Gabe chose to takeoff from the island of St. Maarten and land in Washington DC at Reagan National Airport (DCA) I could not believe how calm he was. He requested a peaceful flight so we didn't encounter much turbulence, but still had a very realistic experience. It truly felt like we were up in the air and the scenery was breath taking!
When we landed Gabe did not want to leave! We will be back soon, next time we might fly to Paris!
