Church Family and the Role of Widows (1 Timothy 5:1-16)

We should treat people in the Church like family. The elders like fathers and mothers, and the younger like brothers and sisters. The Church is about intimate, familial relationships through the Spirit. We care and provide for one another as we would our own family.
A special case in our Church family are widows. In the ancient world, they were especially vulnerable members of society, which meant the Church did its best to provide for them. But the widows should not be idle but urged to good works. They should continue helping in their families if possible, or serving people in the Church, or marry if they were young enough to still have families. This is all in accordance with God's gift of femininity. Women, and men for that matter, should not be idle because that leads to filling time with sinful thoughts and deeds.
