fu academy If you want to build a diversified, passive and low cost investment portfolio, then there is no way around ETFs. They are one of the simplest and most convenient investment products for beginners and long-term investors.
#ETF stands for exchange traded #Fund and it makes more sense if you read it backwards: It’s a fund that is traded on a stock exchange. The first ETF, the S&P 500 Trust ETF, was launched in 1993 by State Street.
And since then, #ETFs have become incredibly popular. The money invested in ETFs has gone up by 3,000% since 2003. According to Statista, there are 8,552 ETFs globally as of 2021. And amongst those, you will find ETFs that are incredibly dangerous and some that don’t even deserve the name ETF.
The latest trend in the ETF space is investing in active ETFs like the #ARK Innovation ETF, ticker symbol ARKK. However, the name “ETF” is a misleading here, because active funds like Cathie Wood’s ARK ETFs don’t passively track an index anymore, but actively pick companies - just like an actively managed mutual fund. The label “ETF” is often just used by those funds to participate in the ETF boom of the last few years.
That one example just shows how dangerous some ETFs can be. But #ActiveETFs aren’t even the most dangerous ETF type out there.
