So who remembers The Return of the Antelope? It was a mid-80s drama series set in late Victorian times that will immediately invite comparisons with The Borrowers, but more accurately it's actually Gulliver's Travels, only the other way around. There's no 'story so far' or much by way of explanation at the beginning, but stick with it and you'll soon pick up that Lilliputians Brelca, Fistram and Spelbush are living in the doll's house in young Philippa and Gerald's nursery without anyone else knowing, and obviously adventures ensue. And not an antelope in sight.
This particular episode, which is called Philippa's Brave Deed (originally broadcast on Sunday, 2nd November, 1986), sees Brelca taken ill, leading to a dilemma of how to get hold of a cure without giving away the secret of her existence. The solution is a clever, bold, noble, dangerous one, and not something to be tried at home.
Naturally, my eye was taken by the visual effects on display, and they really do push the limits of the era. The three Lilliputians are obviously in front of a blue screen, but they're still acting 'live' when interacting with other cast members - they're just in a different part of the studio. They didn't really have the facilities to tidy things up too much in post-production back then, so attention to detail must have been paramount in order to get everything right at source. Impressive in that sense, but also thoroughly enjoyable overall.
