More than 14,000 people have fled their homes within a 6-kilometre (3.73 mi) radius of the Mayon volcano crater on Luzon Island, Philippines. Local authorities announced a mandatory evacuation after volcanic activity increased earlier in the week. As the volcano began spewing lava and hot rocks, the high-risk area around Mayon could be expanded if the eruption becomes violent.
The evacuated families visit their homes every day to guard property and look after farm animals.
Mayon is one of 24 active volcanoes in the Philippines. It last erupted violently in 2018, leading to the evacuation of tens of thousands of villagers.
