This performance was an extension of the performance ‘Touch Cells’ that the Artists performed in November 2019 at the John Hansard Gallery as part of the project Detangling the Knots (see below).

Engaging with the notion of neurons growing, connecting and disconnecting, the artists, in their own individual cell, create large crochet chain webs and tangles in front of a projected film. The film contains footage from the neuroscience research and the creative workshops with people with dementia collected by the artists.

The separation of the physical spaces and delayed virtual connections explores a sense of disconnect, both in the brains of those living with dementia but also with regard to the social distancing rules that we found ourselves amidst whilst making this work.

Detangling the Knots is an arts/science project looking at dementia and Alzheimers, conceived by Barbara Touati-Evans, in collaboration with Artists Susan Merrick and Melanie ray, Sceintists from Southampton Uni, Red House Museum, Aldershot Centre for Health and Hampshire Cultural Trust.

Inspired by the notion of tangles, protein tangles found in the brain of Alzheimer's disease patients but also wool knots created in crochet, the protein tangles observed in the brain of people with the illness are linked to the progressive death of brain cells/neurons. The project is an exploration of dementia and Alzheimer's in different contexts, in the research laboratories of neuroscientists and in people who have been diagnosed with it.

We conducted the early phases of the project: a residency in the neuroscience labs at the University of Southampton in Autumn 2019 followed by workshops with people diagnosed with dementia in Winter/Spring 2020. As we were getting ready for the last exhibition/public engagement phase, putting together all the elements, we suddenly found ourselves in isolation due to the Corona virus pandemic, now entering a different dimension of the project. Bringing together the research and experience of dementia.
