AFP News Agency Marine biologists are studying the impact of mercury on whales and seals in Antarctica. Some 9,000 tons of mercury are released into the environment every year. The toxic heavy metal is believed to reach the ocean through rivers or rain. At the top of the food chain, marine mammals are particularly susceptible to mercury contamination.
