Napoleon and Josephine. A certain French general is on the verge of a major battle, but he first has to contend not only with devious plots to overthrow him, but also the eternal quandary of whether he has headgear which is quite fashionable enough. (In fact, I can't believe the episode wasn't called The Emperor's New Hat.) One thing he does have, though, is the next sunstone. Through disguises, seduction, and frying pans, who will be first to get their hands on it?
This episode was first broadcast on Monday, 24th February, 1992, and is an extremely strong one in my humble opinion - but it's slightly odd in that Penny's hardly in it. Well, she plays a pivotal role in the plot, of course, but it's ages before she first appears, and then she spends ages more unconscious. Never mind, though, because this one is driven' by T-Shirt being determined to show what he can do. Kerry Shale as Napoleon is absolutely fantastic, and probably one of the best guests of the series, playing the part as he does in such an unlikely and cartoony (but perfectly fitting) manner. Kerry was so good, in fact, that they invited him back to play a gangster in the final series. He also appeared in The Tomorrow People and Mike and Angelo, from the same writers.
There are too many funny gags to start naming them all, but just the faux-French air reminiscent of 'Allo 'Allo and Inspector Clouseau alone keeps the humour going from start to finish. There's a slightly naughty "But we've only just met" joke in there, but that's what I love about the show by this stage: it had grown up with its audience, and they were willing to push the boundaries a bit, but it was always pitched at just the right level and absolutely never crude or tasteless. (Unlike so much kids' TV today, but I'll save that rant for elsewhere.) Tabatha's completely unprovoked attack on T-Shirt and the subsequent argument right at the start also really made me laugh - "When I want your opinion, I'll give it to you" is one that I've stored away in the memory banks for future use. And that's not to mention naming characters Bidet (played by Jeff Shankley, whose IMDB entry spans 1963 to 2009 yet somehow lists absolutely nothing in the 1980s - I'm not 100% convinced they haven't conflated two different actors with the same name) and Chuck Beret. Honestly! Brilliant fun.
Don't miss some nice Children's ITV continuity at the beginning and end featuring Tommy Boyd.
Many thanks to Grant for providing this recording.
