This week marks the anniversary of a major medical milestone. On Jan. 11 1964, the first surgeon general's report on smoking and health was released. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “The release of the report was the first in a series of steps, still being taken more than 40 years later, to diminish the impact of tobacco use on the health of the American people.” Health experts say since then, the U.S. has taken strides to reduce tobacco use, “…but despite progress, tobacco use remains the number one cause of preventable death and disease, killing more than 480,000 Americans,” according to a news release from the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. The organization adds, “Today, 46 million U.S. adults and 2.8 million youth still use some form of tobacco, and the industry spends $8.6 billion each year to market its deadly and addictive products.” Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids President and CEO Yolonda Richardson joined KCRA 3 to discuss the landmark report and what still needs to be done.
