Sakura - Petali al Vento
The brief and simple prelude to the set took merely 2 hours from draft to finish. Written as an exercise to practise the use of various less common chord progressions, extended cadences, etc. A notable feature is that there is no actual melody line throughout the piece (except at the very end after the Neapolitan 6th). The first piece of the set focuses on a prominent symbol of Japanese culture - the Cherry Blossom, picturing petals fluttering through the breeze.

The Revolving Lantern
A brisk and stamina-demanding showpiece which features two contrasting sections, one molto perpetuo and the other static.
The revolving lantern, or Soumatou/Zoumadeng is a lantern that produces spinning images, which is powered by a candle in the lantern that produces heat and eventually an upward current. It has been said that before death, a person can see their own life in front of their eyes like a revolving lantern.

Suiren
Although the piece bears a Japanese name, the piece actually takes more musical reference from Chinese instruments - particularly the guzheng.
The water lily is a symbol of purity and dignity in Hinduism and Buddhism. This piece is composed to describe the beauty of this impeccable flower.

A Lantern Festival Frolick
Throughout my first year at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, I was exposed to a large amount of experimental music. I admire the creativity of expression in experimental music, yet I was also confused when listening to most experimental music – it may sound like sheer noise to me in some instances. And so I thought: why not compose a piece that uses extended techniques within a tonal structure? Perhaps “linking experimental music with conventional music” can be a new development direction for me. Bearing a loose sonata form, this vivacious finale is set in a Yuanxiao festival, a celebration in China commonly tied with fireworks and lanterns (of course). A special feature of this piece is the use of black key clusters near the end. This is an attempt to infuse extended techniques into tonal music.
