The beginning of the nightly news on Sunday, 28th October, 1990, which sees Michael Buerk telling us about most of Europe deciding on a single currency and setting up a European bank, with only the UK holding out against it. They'll all be back in December, says reporter Brian Hanraha-hanrahan, to see if they can all come to an agreement - only, they weren't, as this very day's events triggered the domino effect that led to Geoffrey Howe's resignation, which led to Michael Heseltine's leadership challenge, which led to the ultimate downfall of Thatcher precisely one month later. From tiny acorns, and all that.
Apropos of nothing at all, I always wonder whether any of the news clips I upload fall on the exact day any of my regular viewers were born. I'd like to think people look up their own birthdate just to see what the world was like the day they entered it. In this case, they'd be 33 now, as I write this. Probably far too busy for such frivolities.
Many thanks to Ben for providing this recording.
