After months of intense battle for control of the industrial powerhouse in east Ukraine, Russian forces moved into the war-torn town of Avdiivka for the first time but were driven out, the mayor of the town said on Wednesday night.
Russian military bloggers earlier on Wednesday boasted of a major Russian military breakthrough on the southern flank of the beleaguered fortress settlement of Avdiivka in eastern Ukraine, which has been the target of Russian attacks in recent months.
Moscow began an expensive, unsuccessful attempt to seize control of the town in the early morning. Since 2014, Russian-backed soldiers have been fighting for control of the town in Ukraine.
According to Kyiv, its armed troops are resisting Russian attempts to surround the town, which was home to an estimated 32,000 people before the war.
Russian reconnaissance and sabotage teams made their way into Avdiivka's southern district, but they were driven out.
There were lots of modest private houses in the town's southern residential area, which gave Moscow's forces an advantage.
Compared to the sturdy industrial facilities located in the settlement's northern section, where Russian and Ukrainian troops have been engaged in combat for several months, these targets are simpler to achieve.
However, there were significant losses for the Russians as well. The "Thirteenth Telegram channel," on the other hand, said that fighting was occurring in the streets of Avdiivka in response to recent Russian advances.
According to the channel, Moscow's military supported their movement by using "the tactics of undermining," which include tunneling beneath enemy fortifications, filling them with explosives, and detonating them.
Apartments in the southern part of Avdiivka are one- to two-story buildings that are vulnerable to artillery fire, whereas the AKHZ (industrial buildings) protect the northern part of the neighborhood.
Russian soldiers are continuously attempting to encircle Avdiivka, but Ukrainian defenders are holding them off, according to a report released by the Ukrainian General Staff on Thursday morning.
The extent to which the Russians have seized Avdiivka is unknown. Fighting has centered in Avdiivka both during the full-scale invasion and ever since Moscow's forces initially invaded Ukrainian territory in the Donbas and Crimea in 2014.
It is located close to Donetsk, a city controlled by both Russia and separatists that is important for both sides politically and logistically.
The capture of Avdiivka by Russia would mean the removal of a major Ukrainian bulge in the front line and possibly the opening of a road to Kramatorsk, 43 miles north of the Ukrainian-controlled Donetsk area. Kramatorsk is now the administrative capital of the region.
The Russian army has been attempting to take Avdiivka, a city in eastern Ukraine, for the past two months. It started with a full-scale frontal attack.
Numerous equipment items were destroyed. It then sent armored columns off in various directions.
Small infantry groups are currently being launched in a third wave to breach Ukrainian defenses. For nearly ten years, Avdiivka has been on the front lines.
Three miles to the southwest and a twenty-minute drive away, Donetsk is the regional capital that Russia staged a forcible seizure of in the spring of 2014.
After that, in an industrial area overlooking a wasteland of trees and yellow feather grass, Ukrainian and Russian forces engaged in combat.
Shells shot out both ways.
Its Ukrainian defenders are hanging on for the time being. Despite their foolishness, the Russians have more of everything. This included 152mm howitzers, tanks, and Soviet-era MT-LB armored fighting vehicles, as well as 40,000 soldiers gathered on the Avdiivka salient.
The Ukrainians guarding Avdiivka currently have sufficient defense against an assault. However, Ukrainians will require a great deal more ammo if the Russians continue to advance in that manner.
