Why are there bumps on the F and J keyboard keys?

· 17.10.2023 · 20:05:51 ··· ··· Tuesday ·· 2 (2) litrover
Have you ever wondered why the F and J keys on your keyboard have bumps on them? It's not just a random design choice. These bumps, also known as homing keys, are there to help you find your place on the keyboard without having to look down.

The F and J keys are the home row keys for your left and right index fingers, respectively. When you're typing without looking at the keyboard, your fingers should always return to these two keys after each stroke. The bumps help you find these keys quickly and easily, even if you're not looking.

Using the home row keys is an important part of touch typing. It allows you to type much faster and more accurately than you could if you had to look at the keyboard every time you pressed a key.
